- Medicare Part D is optional and only offered by private insurance companies who are approved by the federal government.

- Medicare Part D can be purchased as a standalone plan, if you have Medicare Part A and Part B (Original Medicare).

- Medicare Part D has a monthly premium in addition to any Medicare premium you already pay.
